Virtual Magnifying Glass is a free, open source, screen magnification tool for Windows. It is simple, customizable, and easy-to-use.

The version offered here has some important bug fixes and the ability to run with or without mousemsg.dll. It is now possible to run magnify on Windows XP as a limited user. I have also reduced the size of magnify.exe from 84 to 48 Kb and mousemsg.dll from 52 to 2.5 (yes, it's smaller than 3 )Kb.

A native Windows XP x64 version is now available

This is one very worthy tiny app ! Thanks go to the magnifier team.

What is mousemsg.dll ?

This file allows magnify to be notified when you double click the middle mouse button (the scroll wheel on some mouses). On this event the magnification window will appear regardless of the program you were working in.

Is mousemsg.dll needed for magnify to run ?

No. I have changed magnify to run successfully with or without mousemsg.dll. If mousemsg.dll is not present the double click of the middle mouse button will not work. Magnify will automatically load and enable the feature if mousemsg.dll is found in the same folder as magnify.exe

Do I need to restart magnify to allow mousemsg.dll's features ?

No. I have added a new item in the menu, Reload mousemsg.dll. Click this item after you have placed mousemsg.dll in the same folder as magnify.exe and the feature will be enabled. The feature is automatically enabled if mousemsg.dll is already present when magnify.exe is run.

Does magnify change anything on my computer ?

  • magnify does not write to any files
  • magnify writes to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Virtual Magnifying Glass in the registry to keep its settings

I'm a developer, can I have the source code ?

Sure can. The SourceForge project is also available at http://sf.net/projects/win64/
